At Corus, we understand that protecting your privacy is critical to maintaining our relationship. This Privacy Commitment to communicates the principles that guide our approach your personal information.  It should be read with our Privacy Policy, which describes our specific practices with respect to personal information, including why we collect and use it, and with whom we share it.

Our Privacy Commitment to you:

  • We only collect personal information by lawful and fair means, and, where appropriate, with your knowledge or consent.
  • We inform you of the purposes for which your personal information is collected at or before the time the information is collected.
  • We only collect personal information relevant for the purposes that it is to be used.
  • We strive to keep your personal information accurate, complete and up-to-date as is reasonably necessary for those purposes.
  • We use and disclose personal information only for the purposes previously identified unless you provide us with your consent or by the authority of law.
  • We keep your personal information only for as long as is necessary, or as required by law.
  • We strive to protect your personal information against loss or unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure. We use physical, technical, and administrative safeguards that are appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.
  • We make specific information about our practices and policies with respect to the management of personal information readily available to you.
  • We inform you, upon request, of the existence, use or disclosure of your personal information.
  • We amend your personal information when it is found to be inaccurate or incomplete.
  • We are responsible for the personal information under our control. Our Chief Privacy Officer oversees a privacy management program that is designed to protect your personal information.

Corus Entertainment Inc. and its affiliates (“Corus”) understand and appreciate the concerns that our customers, subscribers, audience members, and other members of the public with whom we interact (“you” or “your”) may have about personal information gathered by us.

With this Privacy Policy, along with our Privacy Commitment, Corus strives to provide you transparency and ensure the confidentiality of your personal information in accordance with the principles set forth in applicable privacy legislation.

We may supplement this Privacy Policy with other terms and conditions at (or prior) to the time we collect your personal information. This may include, for example, a description of why we are collecting your personal information in a particular context, or applicable terms of use posted on the platforms, websites, or applications that Corus (or its affiliates) own, operate or control (our “Sites”).

If at any time you no longer agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy or any other privacy related terms that we have communicated to you, please do not use, or interact with our Sites, products, or services.

This Privacy Policy covers the following subjects:

This Privacy Policy describes how and why Corus collects, uses, stores, and discloses your personal information. Personal information generally means any information about you as an identifiable individual. This includes your full name, address, telephone or cellphone number, e-mail address, age, marital status, education level, occupation, payment information, location data, device information used to access our Sites, IP addresses, preferences, and opinions, among other things.
This Privacy Policy only applies to your personal information in your capacity as a Corus customer or subscriber (e.g., newsletter subscriber, Global TV app accountholder), , audience member, or member of the public with whom Corus directly interacts.
Corus’ privacy obligations in relation to its employees and business partners are addressed separately and are accordingly out of scope of this Privacy Policy.
Personal Information that Corus collects, uses, or disclosed for journalistic purposes are also out of scope of this Privacy Policy.

Corus may interact with you across our various Sites and in a variety of contexts. Depending on the context, we may need to collect personal information from you to allow us to provide you with our products and services, or for other legitimate purposes outlined below, at the time of collection, or as otherwise permitted by law. We only collect, use, and retain personal information to the extent necessary to carry out our intended purposes.

The following are common examples where we may collect your personal information:

  1. Contests

We administer public contests.

As part of contest entry, we may ask you for personal information such as your name, address, postal code, or age.

We collect this personal information from you to: facilitate your contest entry, confirm your eligibility, distribute contest prizes, track compliance with official rules and regulations, and improve our products and services.

We will only publish a contest winner’s name and/or photograph after receiving prior written consent from the winner and the appropriate, fully completed release forms. If a parent or guardian enters a contest on behalf of a child who is under the age of majority in their province of residence, we will only publish the minor’s name and/or photograph after the parent or guardian takes an active step to confirm consent and we receive fully completed release forms from them.

  1. Newsletters, club memberships, news alerts and promotional subscriptions

We offer many ways for our customers and audiences to engage with us, including by subscribing to newsletters, club memberships, news alerts and promotions.

We may ask you to provide us with personal information such as your name, e-mail address, postal code, or age in order to administer your subscription and serve content and advertising to you.

We may also collect information about you such as demographic data, opinions, preferences, and interactions with our and our partners’ platforms and services in order to offer you content, products and services that are more relevant for you.

  1. Product and service accounts

We offer various products and services that may require you to set up a user account.

In those cases, we may collect information such as your name, e-mail address, postal code, or age, in order to administer your account. Additionally, if your account includes paid transactions, we may collect payment information such as credit card details and billing address.

We may also collect information about you such as demographic data, opinions, preferences, and interactions with our and our partners’ platforms and services in order to offer you content, products and services that are more relevant for you.

Some of our applications (for example, Global TV, Global News, Skytracker) may collect location data to provide local weather updates, alerts, warnings, to restrict access to content where required by territorial rights restrictions, or for advertising or marketing purposes.

  1. Direct communication about programming and accessibility

In some cases, you may communicate directly with us in relation to our programming, including when participating in interactive program segments (such as calling in to a talk radio program) and providing feedback or expressing concerns to us about a program segment after it airs. In those cases, we may collect personal information from you (such as name, e-mail address, phone number or mailing address, as applicable) for purposes of establishing your identity.

You may also want to provide feedback regarding the accessibility of our services in any area of our business. In those cases, we may collect the details of the channel of communication used:  email address in case you choose to provide it to us when you fill out the applicable web form, email address if the communication was sent by email, telephone number in case you choose to provide a phone number to call you back, mailing address if provided.

In addition to the above, depending on the circumstances, we may also collect from you the following information in order to ascertain if there is a technical problem: city or province you are located in, the name of your cable or other provider, how you access our station (e.g., satellite, cable, streaming), name of the program you watched and time, or the cable box that you were using if you were watching via cable.

  1. In-person attendance to our events or visiting our premises

You may attend one of our premises or a public event we are hosting or sponsoring. In those cases, we may collect personal information, such as your name, for registration, security, identity verification, health, and safety reasons and, where appropriate, for subsequent communication. The personal information collected will depend on the nature of the attendance or event.

Our premises are under video surveillance for security purposes, and we will make and keep video recordings for such security purposes.

  1. Research and marketing studies

We occasionally conduct research studies and/or focus groups involving volunteer participants to inform our business strategies and understand our audience, for example, on program scheduling preferences, engagement with our products or services or trends in audience preferences. For these purposes, we may collect personal information, such as demographic data, preferences or interests.

The personal information collected in connection with a research study or focus group will depend on the nature of the underlying study.

  1. Fulfilling a transaction

We may need to collect personal information from you, such as your name, phone number, email address, or billing address, to fulfill a transaction between us and you, for example, if you purchase a ticket for one of our events.

The personal information collected will depend on the nature of the transaction.

  1. Online Feedback, Email Submission, Notifications, and Social Sharing

If you send an e-mail to us or fill out our “feedback” form through one of our Sites, we will collect your e-mail address and the full content of your e-mail, including attached files, and other information you provide.

We may use and display your full name and email address when you send an email notification to a friend through one of our Sites, or the social network from which you have connected to the website or application (such as in an invitation, or when sharing your content).

  1. Visiting or using our Sites

When you visit or use our Sites, we may collect information about the computer or device you use and how you interact with our Sites including Internet Protocol (IP) address, device identifiers, operating system, browser type, screen resolution,  content you viewed or listened to, pages visited, and interactions with buttons or other website controls. We do this to help analyze, operate, and improve the functioning of the Sites. We also use it to help determine the effectiveness of our advertising and marketing, perform analytics, conduct research, learn about the characteristics of our audiences, record tendencies and preferences for easier use of the Sites, perform accounting, auditing, and other internal functions, and provide you with content and advertisements that are more tailored to your interests.

For the above purposes, we may also collect data across your smartphone, tablet, desktop computer or other connected devices (cross-device data). For more information, refer to the “Cookies and Online Interest Based Advertising” section below.

Additionally, when you seek to access age-gated content on one of our Sites, we may request information about your date of birth to establish that you are old enough to access the content.

  1. SMS and push notifications

If we offer SMS notification or push notification functionality, and you choose to receive SMS notifications and/or push notifications, we may send such notifications to your mobile device. We will collect and store the information you provide, including your telephone number. You can opt out of receiving SMS and push notifications and you can adjust the types of notifications you receive by editing your notification settings on your mobile device (see “Withdrawal of Consent” below). We will not charge a fee to use SMS notifications or push notifications, but any text messages sent and/or received are subject to standard text messaging rates. Additionally, text messages sent and/or received count towards a monthly quota as any other messages do. Any users, whether sending or receiving text messages, should be aware that standard text messaging rates may apply. Text messaging rates can normally be found by asking your mobile carrier.

  1. Show/content submissions

Occasionally, you will have the opportunity to submit ideas or content such as videos or audio for inclusion on one of our Sites. At the time of submission, you may be asked to include your name, contact number, email, or address. Only those who produce the show in question and designated support staff will have access to the contact information and it will not be passed on to a third party. People who submit ideas or content may be contacted if the show’s producers are interested in using idea submissions.

  1. Chat forums

Our Sites may, from time-to-time, feature forums (such as message boards and chat rooms) which enable our users to communicate with each other. We do not moderate and are not responsible for the content that you or any user posts on any forum on the Site. All personal information you post in a forum becomes public information and may be viewed, collected, and used by any visitor to the Site, and may expose you to unsolicited messages. This is beyond our control. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you do not post any personal information on any forum that you do not wish to disclose to others.

  1. “Refer A Friend” Or “Sharing” Features

If you choose to use a referral service to “tell a friend” about the website, a specific article or feature on the website, or a contest that is running, we may ask you for your friend’s name and email address. We will then send your friend an email on your behalf inviting them to visit the content which you have shared. We store your friend’s name and email for a short period for the sole purpose of sending this email and for redundancy checking, to be sure that your friend does not receive multiple copies of the same email message. We do not keep or use this information for any other purpose.

In the event that you provide your friend’s name and email address, you represent that you have their consent, and you agree to provide them with the information contained in this Privacy Policy, exempting us from any liability in this regard. However, we may carry out the necessary verifications to verify this fact, adopting the corresponding due diligence measures, in accordance with applicable law.

  1. Social Media Campaigns

We may collect personal information from you for execution of our social media campaigns, such as name, email address or your device ID.

The relevant social media platform may collect your personal information separately from us. Please review the “ When do we link to our business partners’ and third- party content/websites?” section below for more information.

  1. Tailored Content and Advertising

When you engage with us, we may collect certain information, such as your gender, age range, device ID number, e-mail address, IP address, postal code, or location data, and combine them with data from other sources to better understand your preferences and provide you with a more tailored experience and relevant advertising.

For example, when you subscribe to our newsletters, enter our contests, or download our apps, we may collect this information and combine it with your usage activities (such as browsing, viewing habits or app usage) when you watch our programming through our owned and operated platforms (such as the Global TV app) or our partner platforms (for example, StackTV on Amazon, Rogers, and Fubo TV, or Pluto TV), and with aggregated demographic data from our own and our partner organizations. We may also combine this data from a third-party source to support various forms of segmentation for marketing and advertising purposes, content, or experience personalization.

Our analysis of your personal information may involve automated decisions, wherein software processes your data along with other factors to present you with more pertinent content and advertisements.

We will always comply with an applicable privacy legislation and industry best practices and standards  before using your information in this way, and you can opt out at any time if you change your mind. See “Withdrawal of Consent” below for more information.

Most of the personal information we collect from you for the purposes stated above will be provided directly by you.   However, in the cases immediately below, we may collect personal information from you indirectly.

  1. Information from third parties

We may collect information about you from our service providers acting on our behalf, your telecommunications service provider that makes our services or content available to you, or other third parties, such as data licensors and aggregators, marketing companies, advertising partners, programming distributors, social media platforms, and public databases.

  1. Information inferred about you

We may derive additional information or draw inferences about you based on the information we have collected from you directly, through your device, from our partners and service providers or through third parties in accordance with their privacy policies.

We collect information about the computer or device you use to access our Sites. Our Sites use cookies and other technologies, like web beacons, pixel tags or your device’s unique identifier, to provide the best browsing experience possible.

For example, they let us follow your browser’s path on our Sites across multiple visits. By using these technologies, we can: recognize returning visitors, facilitate the visitor’s access to (and use of) the Sites, track general usage patterns that drive content and service improvement, allow users to select and prioritize their preferences, ensure that content standards of the website or application are rigorously upheld, and facilitate future communication (for example, registration is needed to enter certain contests). Collectively, these functions enable us to tailor our Sites and advertising to better match your interests and preferences. No sensitive personal information is collected, stored in, or gathered from these cookies or other technologies.

You may choose to set up your browser to delete and/or refuse cookies or alert you when cookies are sent while still accessing our Sites. Most modern web browsers contain extensive controls that give you the ability to make choices about your privacy. These controls enable you to block or limit cookies. Please note that if you do not accept a cookie from our Sites, it may limit our ability to customize and improve our Site features and decrease functionality.

Corus participates in the DAAC AdChoices program, and adheres to its principles of education, transparency, customer control, data security, sensitive data, and accountability.

Online interest-based advertising uses information gathered through your browser or mobile device about your visits over time and across different websites and apps in order to help predict your preferences and show you advertisements that are more likely to be of interest to you.

We may engage third party advertising and analytics companies to collect personal information from you when you access our Sites, and/or serve interest-based advertisements to you when you visit our Sites.

We may also infer information about you based on the information you provide to us directly, or indirectly from third parties, including information received from social media sites in accordance with your privacy settings on those Sites. We may also collect demographic, psychographic and lifestyle profile data from third parties, which may be predictively associated with you, based on what we know about you. For example, data may be available suggesting common interests or attributes of people living in a specific geographic area. Any of the above information that is considered to be personal information will be treated as such according to this Privacy Policy.

AdChoices’ various tools allow you to opt out of interest-based advertising from one or all of the participating companies (including Corus) on websites and apps.

Anonymous information is information that is not related to an identified or an identifiable natural person and cannot be combined with other information to re-identify individuals. Aggregated information are information elements collated on a number of individuals, typically used for the purposes of making comparisons or identifying patterns. If personal information is properly anonymized so that it can no longer be linked to you, the information is no longer considered personal.

We, including our affiliates and such other third party as we may designate reserve the right to use, maintain, update, disclose and/or sell anonymous, aggregated information to third parties.

We may share your  personal information with Corus affiliates, business partners, external suppliers and service providers who perform functions on our behalf, including fulfilling orders, providing streaming services or other third-party content, providing promotional materials to our users, sending e-mail, managing, compiling, storing and processing data, administering contests, processing credit card payments, providing customer service, or for any other purposes described under ““What personal information do we collect and why do we collect and use it?” above.

We do not share your personal information with these parties except to the extent necessary to enable us to conduct our business or to provide the services and products to you directly or on our behalf.  We require any such service providers or suppliers to store your personal information securely, and to only use your personal information in a manner consistent with an applicable privacy legislation and industry best practices and standards.

Corus will not disclose your personal information to a third party for purposes other than those described above unless you have explicitly consented to this disclosure, or in connection with a prospective sale of all or part of our business assets, or as required by law, such as in compliance with a court order.

Some of these third parties may be located outside of your province of residence or outside of Canada and may access and process your personal information from the United States or other jurisdictions. In such circumstances, we require the personal information to be protected with appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable privacy legislation and industry best practices and standards. Nevertheless, your personal information may be subject to the laws of other countries.

We will store your personal information for as long as reasonably necessary or relevant to fulfill the purposes for which the information was collected, or for longer periods as required or authorized by law.

When your personal information is no longer needed, we will use reasonable efforts to delete, destroy or de-identify your personal information in a secure manner, and we will request any third parties storing your personal information on our behalf to delete, destroy or de-identify your personal information in a secure manner.

We use appropriate security safeguards which vary depending on the sensitivity of the personal information. This includes policies and procedures in place to protect the integrity, privacy, and confidentiality of the information that we collect and maintain, and contracts with third parties that manage the information provided by you. We review our security procedures and tools to ensure they meet industry standards. When using personal information that we have collected, at Corus, only individuals with a legitimate business need will have access to your personal information. Please be aware that, despite our best efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable.  The open nature of the Internet is such that data may flow over networks connecting you to our systems without security measures and may be accessed and used by people other than those for whom the data is intended.

To help ensure the privacy of your information, we urge you not to share your username and password with anyone and recommend that you change your password frequently and store it in a safe place. If you are asked to create a username or password, please select words that do not personally identify you. We may offer “auto login” which allows users to enter member areas of our website without re-entering password information. You may want to disable auto login on your device, in order to prevent access by unauthorized users of your device.

We will make reasonable efforts to comply with certain types of requests with respect to your personal information to the extent that they do not compromise privacy or security interests and as required by applicable laws.

Before complying with such requests, we will need to reasonably verify your identity and the scope of your request. This will likely include asking for additional information at the time of the request, such as which Corus entity you interacted with and under what circumstances (for example, when entering a contest or subscribing to a membership for a particular Corus brand), the type of personal information involved, and the date range of your interaction.

The following are the common types of requests and our general approach to addressing them

  1. Withdrawal of consent

You may withdraw your consent for our use, storage, and disclosure of your personal information, subject to applicable law and the reasonable terms of any contract that you may have with us.

We will inform you of any consequences of the withdrawal of consent that are not evident from the notice (for instance, an inability to continue to provide a certain service) and cease the collection, use or disclosure of the personal information as soon as feasible.

  1. Accessing, updating, or correcting your personal information

You may request to be informed of the existence, use, and disclosure of your personal information we hold about you and be given access to that information.  Also, you may request to update or correct it.

We will respond to your request within a reasonable period and at a minimum or no cost to you.

We will inform you of any circumstances where we may not be able to provide to you all the personal information held by us (for instance, when the disclosure would reveal confidential business information, if the personal information is protected by solicitor-client privilege, or if we are forbidden by law from releasing the information).

  1. Deleting your personal information

Subject to limited exceptions provided by the applicable privacy legislation, you may request that we dispose of your personal information under our control if:

  1. Your information was collected, used, or disclosed in contravention of privacy laws;
  2. You have withdrawn your consent, in whole or in part, to the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information; or,
  3. Your personal information is no longer necessary for the continued provision of a product or service requested by you.
  1. Transferring your personal information

If we are subject to privacy legislation that require us to facilitate transfers of your personal information, then you may request such transfer to a third-party data recipient in a secure manner. We will respond to your request within a reasonable period and at a minimal or no cost to you.

We encourage parents and guardians to be aware of and participate in their children’s activities, particularly online activities.   We ask that you do not allow your child to submit any personal information to us in relation to our products and services.

We do not knowingly collect personal information of children without parent or guardian consent. If you believe your child has provided personal information to Corus without your consent, please contact Corus’ Privacy Office (see contact details below) and we will delete it.

Parents and guardians are requested to review this Privacy Policy and discuss its main features with their children, in a manner that the child will understand.

We do not direct or request any third party to collect browsing information respecting the use of the Sites by children, nor do we target advertising to children based on browsing activity.

For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, “Children” means individuals under the age of majority in the province or territory in which they are based when interacting with us.

We may change this Privacy Policy at any time to reflect best practices, new products and services i.e. purposes for collecting personal information, legislative requirements or technological updates. Accordingly, you should review this Privacy Policy from time to time to keep informed of such changes. If we make a material change to this Policy, we will also make reasonable attempts to notify you about them, which may be via update on our website. The most recent date of revision will be indicated prominently at the top of the Privacy Policy.
